What Does an On-Site Structural Inspection Consist of?

Structural Inspections

A structural inspection is a neutral evaluation visually assessing the physical structure and foundation of the facility.

Structural inspections help organizations ensure that the structure of their facility does not have any defects or areas that may pose a risk later down the line. This can either be a relief or a headache depending on the findings discovered and identified during the inspection. Either way, it’s highly recommended that the condition and integrity of your structure is not compromised in any way shape or form.

Having the inspection carried out by a professional engineer will increase the likelihood of receiving the most accurate results and recommendations.

What does an on-site structural inspection consist of?  The structural inspection process is divided into 3 stages.

Stage 1:  Examination

The first stage is a site visit where the professional engineer will visually evaluate the structural stability of the facility. The engineer will look for structural deficiencies, such as deteriorated or corroded beams and connections along with other issues like slippage and settlement in the foundation.

Once a thorough inspection has been conducted, the professional engineer will rank the condition of the facility from “structurally sound”, with no suggested repairs to “major concern”, with recommended improvements. These repairs may be suggested at the time of inspection or conveyed shortly after via email or report.

Stage 2:  Report and Design

If structural reinforcement has been determined for repairs, this stage will consist of a detailed report and design; outlining the improvements for success. These improvements will optimize any of the shortcomings found from the structural inspection.

This design generally attempts to bring the facility back into balance with its original configuration but is not always plausible based on the severity of the condition’s structure. The report and design aims to visually represent which areas need to be improved, along with a thorough explanation in greater detail through the use of text and pictures.

Stage 3:  Final Letter of Completion

The final stage is performing site visits during these modifications to ensure they’re carried out correctly and no further issues are discovered during the modification process. Once completed, a final letter with a PE stamp will be issued stating that the repairs have been executed efficiently and effectively. This verifies that the facility’s structure is now sound and stable.
