Following the Gas Industry development into the Marcellus Shale of natural gas underlying the state of West Virginia and the determination of the necessary processes for fracturing the horizontal bore holes in the shale to effectively extract the gas, it has resulted in considerable volumes of water usage for this process. Large volumes of water are being pumped from the natural streams, used for the fracturing process and then have to be treated prior to discharging the water back into the streams. State and Federal Regulatory Agencies have implemented strict regulations which require the operators to keep the parameters of the water elements within certain parts per million based on the criteria of the law. Regulatory Agencies have also imposed these requirements to Coal Operators who discharge water from their underground coal mine operations.
